How physiotherapy is funded in Australia: a quick guide
Most people pay privately for physiotherapy without realising that Australia runs more than ten separate funding schemes for it. The right one depends on your age, what caused the problem, and which cards you hold. The questionnaire above maps your options in about a minute; the summary below covers the routes we bill most often at GM Physiotherapy on the Gold Coast.
Medicare chronic condition management plans
If a condition has lasted, or is expected to last, six months or more, your GP can write a chronic condition management plan (the old EPC or care plan). That gives you up to five allied health sessions per calendar year with a Medicare rebate of $63.40 per session from 1 July 2026. For patients aged 65 and over, GM Physiotherapy bulk bills 30 minute clinic appointments under these plans, so there is nothing to pay on the day.
Support at Home and aged care funding
Support at Home replaced Home Care Packages in November 2025. For people 65 and over (50 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people), physiotherapy and occupational therapy sit in the clinical care category, which is fully government funded from your budget with no participant contribution, regardless of income. We visit clients at home and in residential aged care across the Gold Coast at a reduced package rate.
NDIS
The NDIS funds therapy for people under 65 with a permanent and significant disability. Under the 2026 to 2027 pricing schedule, physiotherapy is capped at $183.99 per hour for agency and plan managed participants. GM Physiotherapy is a registered NDIS provider and delivers therapy at home, in the clinic, at the pool or in the community.
DVA, WorkCover and motor accident (CTP) claims
Veterans with a Gold or White Card receive fully funded treatment with no gap, in cycles of up to twelve sessions per GP referral. If you were injured at work in Queensland, WorkCover Queensland pays for all reasonable treatment and we bill them directly. After a road accident, the CTP insurer funds approved treatment in the same way. In all three cases there is usually nothing out of pocket while the claim is active.
Private health insurance and everything else
Health fund extras cover returns a partial rebate per visit through HICAPS. Beyond that there are quieter routes many people never hear about: public hospital outpatient clinics, hardship and concession programs, university student led clinics, and diabetes group programs. Who pays for physiotherapy after a car accident in Queensland?
The CTP insurer of the at fault vehicle pays for treatment that is reasonable and necessary, billed directly by the clinic once you have a claim number. Catastrophic injuries move to the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland.
Does the NDIS cover physiotherapy?
Yes, for participants whose plans include capacity building supports. Under the 2026 to 2027 pricing schedule, physiotherapy is capped at $183.99 per hour for agency and plan managed participants; self managed participants can agree to any rate. GM Physiotherapy is a registered NDIS provider.
