What is a stroke?
A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is disrupted. This interruption deprives brain cells of oxygen and nutrients, causing them to die within minutes. Strokes can have significant and varied effects on the body and mind, depending on the part of the brain affected and the severity of the event.
There are two main types of strokes:
- Ischaemic Stroke: The most common type, caused by a blockage in a blood vessel supplying the brain. This can result from a blood clot or a build-up of fatty deposits (atherosclerosis).
- Haemorrhagic Stroke: Occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to bleeding (haemorrhage) that damages brain tissue.
Both types of stroke can have life-changing implications, including:
- Physical Effects: Weakness or paralysis, often on one side of the body (hemiplegia or hemiparesis).
- Communication Challenges: Difficulty speaking or understanding language (aphasia).
- Cognitive Impairments: Problems with memory, reasoning, or judgment.
- Emotional Changes: Anxiety, depression, or mood swings as the brain heals and adjusts.
Strokes can happen suddenly, with warning signs such as face drooping, arm weakness, and speech difficulties. Recognising these symptoms early and seeking immediate medical help can improve outcomes.
